Native tree planting for Wanganui River
Winstone Afforestation Limited this year intend to spend upwards of six-thousand-dollars on a native tree planting programme in the Whanganui National Park. Winstones in Raetihi and the Department of Conservation will join forces for the long-term planting programme on the banks of the Wanganui River from the
Drop Scene to Pipiriki, with Winstones providing funds for fencing and planting. The planting will mean that eventually the pine trees planted in the vicinity of the river will be screened for river users by native trees. Work on landscaping plans have begun in earnest, in an attempt to appease conservation groups, particu-
larly the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, who have criticised the company for its clearing of native forest and burning land near the river. Winstones has over 14,000 hectares in the area and are now looking at preserving the natural view from the river. Planting is expected to take several years to complete.
