Cycle helmet campaign

Public Health Nurse Leigh Berry is campaigning for safe cycling at primary school level. Last year 22 people died in the Wanganui region as a result of injuries sustained in cycling accidents. Eighty per cent of fatalities were from head injuries and 60 per cent were children under 14 years of age. Mrs Berry said the cost of a regulation helmet - around $80$85 is nothing compared to the cost of a life or a child suffering serious injury. Helmets should fit firmly and comfortably when the chin strap is fastened, she said.
