TONGARIRO RADIO NOT GOING AHEAD

Plans to set up a Taupo-based radio station with repeaters and all-year-round broadcasting in the Ruapehu region won't be going ahead. The Broadcasting Tribunal has turned down an application for a warrant by Ceefor Communications Ltd, the company behind SKI FM. Ceefor was one of three applicants for a permanent warrant to run a new radio station serving the Taupo and Rotorua regions. The company wanted to set up repeaters and a small studio in the Ruapehu area so that local broadcasting could continue outside the peak winter season when SKI FM operates for 12 weeks. However, that doesn't mean the end of moves to maintain a radio station here because with deregulation of the broadcasting rules and regulations next year, virtually anyone will be able to obtain a warrant to run * radio station.
