Old time snow in country

"There was a heavy fall of snow in and around Ohakune last Friday night and on Saturday morning snow lay five inches deep on the ground. To those who have arrived lately in the district from warmer climates the sight proved most interesting and as the snow lay on the bush the scene presented was one that would never be forgotten. Business was practically at a standstill in Ohakune town and many residents indulged in snowballing. The school boys were in /b

their element and attacked the runway in such a manner that nearly all had to run for shelter. The snow prevented the early morning train from running between Waiouru and Ohakune and the midday train only got through after engines attached to a ballast spreader cleared the track. Rain set in on Saturday afternoon and with light showers that prevailed yesterday caused a thaw and very little is now to be seen of the snow." (Waimarino County Call, Monday, July 20, 1908).
