Bus stop debate

Bus stops cropped up as a subject for debate again for a Waimarino District Council committee July 13. The managers of Mountain View Motel in Moore Street Ohakune asked the council for the bus stops outside their motel to be moved as they caused a nuisance. Complaints about Turoa Skifield buses left idling outside the motel units accompanied the request, as well as associated complaints

about people waiting for ski buses. The manageress of the motel told the Works and Reserves committee that people waiting for buses sat on the motel fence causing damage, throwing rubbish onto motel property and that up to three buses were left idling at any one time causing traffic congestion. "Do they all have to sit in front of our motel?" asked Mrs Jean McKillop. "They (Turoa Skifields) have ample parking on their own land." She suggested a limit of one bus at a time at the stop. Most councillors

agreed there was a problem but asked where else the buses were to go. Cr Bruce Thompson said the area was absolute chaos with people loading onto the ski buses, adding: "but that seems to be all part of skiing". Cr Sue said the motelliers and their customers were entitled to privacy. He said he believed Turoa Skifields had an alternative bus loading area, on their land in Burns street. Turoa had agreed to move ski racks that were outside the motel and to provide seating, the district engineer told the committee. He also said there were limiting factors at the Burns Street site. Turoa staff use the site for carparking, there are no footpaths and the Burns Street intersection was bad. "So we've spent $1000 fixing it (the intersection) so it's safe, now we hear it's not safe," said Cr Sue. The committee decided the bus stop would remain but asked for rubbish bins to be put in the area and called for the seating "There must be something with bus stops and this council," said Cr Errol Sue, "We give in toO easily."
