Water treatment on target, says District Manager

I refer to your editorial "Our View" in the 12 July 1988 edition which demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of the facts of the Proposed Ohakune Water treatment system. Let me clarify what each of the two stages are. Stage I is the disinfection of the Ohakune water supply which will bring it within Health Department guidelines. Stage II is the construction of a storage facility which will meet increasing peak demands.

Stage I, the disinfection stage, will be built as soon as the Health Department fronts up with the subsidy and council has been advised that this will not be before the 1988/90 financial year. Council is seeking to defer Stage II as long as possible by reducing peak demands, and to this end Council has had discussions with significant users of water, those with carrot washers and also Council has approved a leak detection programme. The deferment of Stage

II will cause no delay whatsoever to the disinfection of the water supply. As can clearly b e seen, therefore, residents "can have a glass of water" as soon as the Health Department fronts up with the subsidy - planned for the next financial year. Judging "Garden Gnome" by his shin kicking blows t o Works Overseer Craig

Ryland's plantings in Raetihi I'd say it was time he picked himself up a little higher off the ground and looked around. "Tall Dwarf A letter in last week's issue of the Waimarino Bulletin under the nom de plume "Garden Gnome" mentioned the loss of a District Council staff member in the Ohakune township. It also made a harsh indirect accusation about Works Overseer Craig Ryland in the words, quote: "Judging by the new plantings at Raetihi I think not." This quote referred to the lack of expertise and knowledge of Mr Ryland in the horticultural and environmental sector. I would like to ask the "Garden Gnome" how long he has been in the Waimarino region and would also like to know why Mr Drabble left the Ohakune Borough. Was it by choice, iiifeeling or management

decision. Surely Mr Drabble's expertise and dedication in horticulture would have been taken into consideration. However, my comments to the public reflect on the workmanship and capabilities of Craig Ryland as I, a citizen of Raetihi have seen it to be. Since Mr Ryland took up the position as foreman on the Raetihi Borough he has transformed the township from a dull, bleak, un-cared-for 'hole' to an intriguing, interesting and colourful village that speaks to you at

each entrance. The town looks like, for the first time in years, that someone really does care. Through this development Craig 's expertise (or lack of it as it is put) in landscaping and horticulture comes not from qualification or degree as I know it, but from the sheer love and dedication he has in gardening that comes directly from the heart like the majority of gardeners in this area. It is the admiration and concern for a piece of land, whether it be Council or private that

makes a gardener, a landscaper or a horticulturalist. Don't blame Craig for the position he has been made responsible to. Judge him for his workmanship when he's given the chance to develop it in the Ohakune township. I would like to sign myself the "Laughing Gnome" but I am proud of Craig's movement towards uplifting the town's self esteem and I stand up to what has been written. When are we going to work together instead o f pulling each other

apart;
