Netball season starts
A number of teams had games doubled up on Saturday to complete the first round of the netball draw for 1988. The Ramblers team is becoming a force to be reckoned with going down by a narrow margin to College last week. On Saturday they had a good win against Karioi. Sharon Gupwell's shooting is a great strength to Ramblers. Raetihi played two
games, beating Karioi by a margin of five and then Postbank by 12. Stephanie Brooks for Raetihi is shooting really well, and the defence team of Frances Hoterenui and Karen Prince make a lot of saves for Raetihi. The Ruapehu Checkers game was without lustre. It is as well to remind players and spectators alike that the umpire controls the game alone and the extra help from some players and the side line on Saturday was both unnecessary and takes away from the enjoyment of netball. There are six people sitting their umpire's exam this week. Very few clubs have supported these classes, contrary to what was expected after a meet-
ing earlier this year. The quality of netball will only improve with an improvement in the standard of umpiring. Commendation must be made to those who have been prepared to give up much of their own time to learn to umpire and so give something back to the game. Results from Saturday: Ruapehu 20 Checkers 4; Raetihi 22 Karioi 17; College 1 34 Postbank 11; Ramblers 27 Karioi 22; Raetihi 2 8 Postbank 16. Draw for next week: 10am Postbank v Ruapehu (College 2 umpire), Raetihi v College 1 (Karioi). 10.50am Postbank v Karioi (Raetihi), College 2 v Checkers (Ruapehu), College 3 v Ramblers
(D.
