Permit prices skyrocket
Charges for building permits have risen up to 270 percent for some parts of the Waimarino after council services were reviewed last month.
Before amalgamation the three Waimarino local authorities h a d separate charging structures, but now permits will cost the same in Raetihi, Ohakune and the Rural wards.
District Manager John Murrihy said the charges had been worked out on a user pays basis, with Ohakune, Raetihi and the County charges brought into line. He said it was not fair for
ratepayers to subsidise new house builders. The biggest increases in fees fall in the rural area, for buildings priced at over $50,000. Ohakune permit prices rise the least, because they were previously much higher than the other wards. A permit for a building costing over $100,000 now costs
$935 whereas it would have cost $765 in Ohakune (representing a 22 per cent increase) $496 in Raetihi (up 88 per cent) and $264 in the Waimarino County (up 254 per cent). For a $50,000 building the new permit price is $616, up 273 per cent in the county, 78 per cent in Raetihi and up 50 per cent in
Ohakune. A $5000 permit will now cost $77, up 7 5 per cent in the county, 27 per cent in Raetihi and six per cent i n Ohakune. For a $500 job a permit now costs $27.50, up about 25 per cent in the county, 37 per cent in Ohakune and 11 per cent in Raetihi.
