Grants for jobs in Waimarino
A new scheme was announced last week to finance job creation projects in the Waimarino district. The Wanganui Re- Cal groups and compagional Development nies to apply for funds. Council is inviting lo- Council executive di-
rector Mr Tom Brock told the Waimarino Bulletin he believed the funds could help new businesses get off the ground in the Waimarino.
Provided the projects will lead to long-term permanent employment, they are eligible for grants of up to $20,000. In total the Wanganui council has $720,000 to administer under the new CEIS or Community Employment Investigation Scheme. Mr Brock said the money had been made available by Government following a $5 million allocation primarily to the Gisborne, Hastings and Napier regions. Wanganui has since been added to the list of regions. The scheme was originally designed for areas which are losing large numbers of jobs and have a high level of non-seasonal unemployment. Mr Brock says his council, which i s chaired by Raetihi accountant Mr Bill Peach, wants to encourage and foster individuals and groups to explore new sources of employment within the area. Proposals must be new to the applicant and should have the potential to lead to the creation of unsubsidised jobs.
Proposals which are approved for the grant also qualify for a Regional Development Investigation Grant. Together the two grants can cover 90 per cent of investigation costs. Examples of costs for which the grant can be used include professional fees, travel and accommodation, tolls, wages, pilot plant testing, plant hire and report preparation. Mr Brock invites people interested in the scheme to contact him at Wanganui Ph (064) 55-515.
