College grant
Ruapehu College is to receive $100 from the Waimarino District Council to support the Korimako oratory contest, but granting the money was approved only after a debate among councillors.
The College is hosting the prestigious event in July, when more than 500 pupils will come to the college from the central and lower North Island. Councillor Ellen Gould asked the council for a donation from council at a recent meeting. Cr Thompson moved to support the college and asked what figure would help the college. "They would b e grateful for $100, $50 would be OK," said Cr Gould. "I move $150 b e granted to the college," said Cr Thompson. Cr Gould said the college was fundraising for a number of activities at present and had 'a hard row to hoe'. Councillor Peggy Frew said there were a lot of ratepayers who
were having a tough time as well. Cr Gould said if councillors were not keen to make the grant they could attend the fund raising 'Casino Night'. The council heard that there was a fund for grants and donations of $9600. "My personal opinion is that I am opposed to this, we shouldn't give money away to this that and the other, they should stand on their own two feet," said Cr Bennett. "This isn't 'this that and the other thing', it's our college," said Cr Gould. Cr Sue asked what the grants account was for. The council heard that a number of sports and arts people had received money from the fund.
