Cost of dying

It used to cost more to die in Raetihi than Ohakune but soon it may be the same. The District Council Finance and Administration committee recently discussed the sundry charges for the district which covers cemetery charges. Last year in Raetihi it cost $110 for a burial during the week and $165 on the weekend. In Ohakune the prices were $100 and $150 respectively. The committee recommended the adoption of uniform charges within the district o f $110 and $165, including GST. The committee heard that while Ohakune graves were dug by hand and the Raetihi

ones by machine, the Raetihi graves were in papa and through a grit pan. This meant the hole was harder to dig and explosives were often needed as well as the digger.
