Youth group alive and well in Waiouru
Waiouru teenagers who maintain there is nothing to do, can think again. A youth group was recently formed in the town by Waiouru resident Simone Burford, who has been involved in the organisation of groups in other areas. The club is open to teenagers Form's Two to Seven. It was predominantly 12 year olds from Waiouru Primary School that attended the first meeting. 'Sam' as she is known by the teenagers, was disappointed with the lack of response from college-age teenagers and intends to approach Ruapehu College students for support.
Activities within the youth group depend solely on the participants, according to Sam. A current project is a pizza scavenger hunt, where members bring their own pizza base and must scavenge the neighbourhood for the topping. The activity hasXproved very popular with other groups. Sam is hopeful of organising a farm visit and 'Hallelujiah Hoedown' later in the year. Last Friday's meeting was held at the Primary School, but negotiations are underway to use the facilities at the Waiouru Marae. Anyone interested in joining the club can phone Sam at 56791.
