COUNCIL BACKS TUROA

Turoa Skifields have asked the council to make representation to the National Roads Board to fund winter clearing of the Ohakune Mountain Road. After discussing the matter the Waimarino District Council agreed to ask the roads board. The council heard that Turoa spends $40,000 each winter to keep the road clear. Councillor Thompson said the council should support Turoa and Mayor Garrick Workman said the Minister of Tourism should be made aware of the cost. Most councillors agreed ratepayers should not pay for the snow clearing. "I can't see anything wrong with airing the matter at the District Roads Council meeting," said Mayor Workman. Cr Bennett said the council would have to put up a strong case for funding as the board had been against it in the past. Control of the road during the winter has been delegated to the Department of Conservation again this year. At last Thursday's Works and Reserves Committee meeting the Ohakune Mt Road was discussed further, with council hearing that the NRB may ask Turoa to contribute to the cost of controlling the road.
