Near miss for Ohakune-Karioi

Ohakune-Karioi were fortunate in their winning rugby game against Kaierau on Saturday. The opposition could have easily taken the game in the last quarter.

In the home game Ohakune Karioi played quite well in the first half. But Kaierau took advantage of the lazy opposition in the second half and narrowed the gap considerably. They could have seen victory if they had taken advantage of goal kicking opportunities. Lachlan Harding moved into first 5 for the game and R a y Brown played fullback.

The changes worked reasonably well for Ohakune-Karioi. Final score was Ohakune-Karioi 25, Kaierau 17. Try scorers for Ohakune-Karioi were: Kerry Wilson, Ray Brown, Glen Brennan. Lachlan Harding converted two tries and kicked two penalty goals and a drop goal. Kaierau's 17 points came from tries by

John Steadman and Bryce Williams and penalty goals from Craig Symons (2) and Peter Te Huna. It was Raetihi's turn to clock up a record-at-tempt rugby score on Saturday. Raetihi played Wanganui Pirates at Raetihi and won 86 nil. The score accurately indicates how the game went, with Raetihi starting fiery and forwards playing well. The side made lots of mistakes and mishandles and were penalised many times.

After an initial settling down s t a g e Raetihi began to score freely, though Pirates often competed well and were always trying. Eddie Ngati and Peter Burke were the pick of the Pirates. Some of Raetihi's good players were Shane Harvey, the pick of the loose forwards, Marsh Tangaroa at prop, Paul Trow playing his second senior game, and Robert Edmonds playing his first. Thomas Waara and Gavin Johnson played well in the backs.

Tries scored by Thomas Waara 4, Steve Gordon 3, Gavin Johnson 3, and one each for Ricky Herewini, Nigel Ruki, Jeff Reid, Shane Harvey, Marsh Tangaroa, and Raymond Rapana Junior. Thomas Waara kicked 5 conversions and Steve Gordon kicked 6. Waiouru played Bulls at Bulls on Saturday winning 15-9. We have no report on the game but tries were scored by Brian Johnson, Graeme Scruton, John Purcell. Victor Kirikiri kicked one drop goal.
