Train carnival 'a success'

Organisers of the Ski Express Carnival declared the weekend a great success. Ruapehu South Business Association spokesman Phil Abel said the business sector was "very satisfied" with public participation. Proceeds from the weekend's activities are still to be calculated. "It's a very positive start to the season and a fitting launch to the snow train." Participation at the Beer Festival was also notable. Revellers filled the marquee to capacity between 5 - 6pm on Saturday, as were night spots in the township. Ohakune Police however, reported that the evening was incident free and praised organisers for the professional execution of the event. Turoa Skifields staff reported good numbers of sightseers utilising lifts and restaurant facilities . Wintery conditions on Sunday failed to dampen enthusiasm for both mountain activities and those operating in the township. Young and old turned out in force for the Fun Run that ended in a lengthy prize-giving at the Ohakune Junction. Other activities that proved popular were horse treks and white water rafting with Ruapehu Outback Adventures. The weekend's visit by the Ski Express is the first of many due to come to the region during the winter season.
