Festival plans all go

It's all go for this weekend's carnival. Bookings have gone well to date for the season's first snow train and Ski Express organiser Don Fletcher is optimistic that around 350 will be arriving Friday night. A large media contingent will be on board to cover the event including representatives from all Auckland's major papers and a television crew, making it an ideal opportunity for the region to show what it has to offer. Further activities to be added to the already healthy programme of events include an aerobics display by Leon Hawea, and mini-mo-torbikes run by the Ruapehu Lions Club. Two hangis will be layed for Saturday, with one being dug up at

lpm for lunch and one at 5pm - ideal for takehome dinners. A matinee session for young and old will feature at Kings Theatre in Ohakune from 4pm5.40pm on Saturday. In the event of inclement weather on Sunday, there will also be a showing of the ski movie 'Leading Edge' that features some local content. The advertised halfmarathon has been modified to a 6km Fun Run (or Walk). The circuit takes competitors from the Ohakune Junction into town via Mangawhero Tce and Miro Streets, and up Old Station Road to the starting point. Competitors pay a small entry fee and are then eligible to win a number of fun prizes.

The race starts at 10am with entries accepted from 9.15am. Any enquiries to Katherine Craig ph 58954. Night entertainment includes the DEBRA Society's 1950's dance at the Ohakune Club from 7.30pm onwards, and raging at the Hot Lava Nightclub from

8pm 'til late. Guest performers are the Willy Taylor Blues Band. Local businesses and tour operators have given great support to the weekend through generous donations from virtually all organisations, enabling good prizes to be

awarded for all events. Up for grabs are several complimentary dinners for two, free accommodation, vouchers and gifts. Everyone is assured a fun weekend with a wide variety of activities for young and old, kicking off with the fancy dress competition.
