No life in river

There is no sign of life in the headwaters of the Retaruke River. A massive slip into the headwaters of the river last year wiped out animal and plant

life, leaving it virtually "dead", according to Department of Conservation officials. The slip put paid to any fishing in the river last season. The river is rcportedly clear again, but Wildlife Conservancy Waimarino Ward chairman Jim Gosman said fishing will be a dubious prospect for some time yet. Department of Conservation officials report trout to be back in the main stream of the river but as yet do not inhabit the headwaters of the Retaruke.
