MOW CUTS TOLL LINES

Phone lines just north of T aihape were cut last Wednesday by a Ministry of Works crew making it impossible to call anywhere outside the Waimarino area. Ohakune Telecom spokeperson Mike Burgess said Telecom regretted the break in service but pointed out that they restored the service as quickly as possible. The lines were out for about an hour and a quarter. "In my experience Telecom rarely is at fault when there is a break in service but always gets the flack," said Mr Burgess. The Bulletin asked Mr Burgess to comment on the fact that when the toll lines are cut it is hot possible to call the faults service. He said it was true that with the new exchange a call to faults was directed/through a toll line which would be cut with the other lines. He said that the signal a caller heard when toll lines were out told the caller that there was a fault with the line. As far as emergency calls are concemed if the police station is unmanned and someone calls 111 the call is answered by Telecom staff in Ohakune and relayed as required said Mr Burgess
