Busy programme for weekend
A full two days of fun and festivities is planned for Queen's Birthday weekend. Those disembarking the Kiwi Lager Ski Express will be greeted by a barrage of buskers and stall holders at the Junction and can then make their way into town for more fun activities. Just some of the stalls and activities already booked: donkey rides, display of wood turning, cake stall, soft toy stand, trash and treasure stall, candy floss stall, sausage sizzle, chinese food, hangi. Weekend events: SATURDAY 11.30am -Fancy dress competition at the BNZ arcade. Junior, intermediate and senior categories. 12 noon - Winners transported to the Junction for the official opening of the carnival. Beer Fest opens until 6pm. 12.30pm - Start of wood chopping competition, continuous throughout the afternoon. Prize of $200. demonstration. Also pre-ski fitness exercises. 1.45pm - Tug 'O War. Teams register at Ohakune Sports and Gifts. 2.pm - Make a snowman competition. Prize donated by Ohakune Shoes. 2.15pm - BMX races. $50 first prize. 2.45pm - Pavement painting. 3.pm - Performance by Spectrum Dancers. 3.15pm - Sheep shearing demonstration. 3.30pm - Ski races. 4.00pm - Carrot eating contest. 6pm-2am - Hot Lava Ski Express Explosion. SUNDAY: 10am - Half marathon starts at Junction Ski Shop. Contact Bubs Hibbard 58241 for entry details. Horse treks at 9.30am, Ilam and 12.30pm. White water rafting at 10am and 2pm. contact 58799 for bookings on both activities. 10am-2pm - Turoa Skifields will be running lifts for sightseeing. Some transport will be available.Cafes
and bars open. (all events subject to weather conditions.) From 10am - Kiwi Lager Ski Express rides. 6.30pm - Ski Express departure. 7.30pm - DEBRA Society 1950's dance on the top floor of the Ohakune Club. Featuring the Rose City Rock and Roll Revival Club and Spectrum Dancers. Those interested in holding stalls should contact Val Parkes. A donation is required from all stalls for the Ruapehu Scout and Cub Group, as a donation for their clean-up on Sunday morning. A minimal fee is attached to all activities. Turoa Skifields have also donated a 1988 adult season pass to be offered as a lucky prize, given away Saturday afternoon at the Carnival. To be eligible to win this great prize, all people entering the Junction Camival and beerfest area will be issued with a numbered entry pass, for a mere $1 dollar donation to the Ruapehu South Business Association.
