Library a hot issue
Cuts to Ohakune Public Library funding caused some of the hottest debate.
The estimates had a budget allocation of $32,750 for the year including $19,555 for wages, $6000 for new books and $6000 for materials such as paint to be used in maintaining and upgrading the premises. During pruning it was suggested the library budget should be cut and spending on new books reduced. Cr Ellen Gould, acting principal of Ohakune Primary School, said she would hate to see any cuts to library funding because the library was an essential part of the town, particularly where the school was concerned. Later Cr Errol Sue suggested cuts should be made to expenditure on books and materials and the hours of the librarian reduced from the current 22 hours a
week. "For heaven's sake," exploded Cr Gould. Cr Sue: "It's all very well." Cr Gould: "It's an excellent library and we shouldn't rain it." General manager John Murrihy suggested the Ohakune ward should make cuts elsewhere and remove $4000 from the estimate for aerial photography. Said Cr Gould: "Take the library and it's the children and old age pensioners you're affecting." Cr Sue said she was being sentimental. Commented Cr Peggy Frew: "Before we touch the library we should have a look at councillors' remuneration." Later in the meeting Ohakune councillors withdrew to discuss budget cuts. When they returned, without Cr Gould, Cr
Sue said they had agreed to prane $1000 from the new books budget and $3000 from materials. Cr Frew asked whether it was really necessary to cut new books and whether Cr Gould had agreed.
Cr Sue said:" She is agreeable." Cr Dave Griffiths said there would be more ratepayer acceptance if books were left. Cr Sue said the reduction could be reviewed in 12 months.
