Savings already?

Savings have already been made from amalgamation. That was the qualified answer by District Manager 'John Murrihy to questions by councillors on the cost-ef-fectiveness of the merger. Cr Dave Griffiths asked Mr Murrihy to

explain rationalisation of administration costs under the district council. Mr Murrihy: "It's been said right from the start that amalgamation will not save money. But there have been some savings already." In the estimates it had been possible to reduce administration costs by a net $75,000. This had come from reduc-

tions of $48,000 in Ohakune and $83,000 at Raetihi and an offsetting increase of $53,000 in the rural ward. Mr Murrihy added that these figures were not a true position because some costs had been removed. Nonetheless there had been a savings. Cr Peggy Frew said in the rural ward amalga-

mation had caused an increase in costs and this concerned her. Mr Murrihy said it was unfair to blame amalgamation. Chairman Garrick Workman said amalgamation had certainly placed a heavy burden on the rural sector. "And that needs to be understood by ratepayers," added Cr Griffiths.
