Fair start to duck shooting season
Waimarino conservation officers were out in force policing game bags during the opening weekend of duck shooting season. Results indicate a fair start to the season. The officials and the ducks were fortunate to have a fine warm opening day. The same luck didn't extend to the hunters who counted on low cloud and windy conditions for a good start to the season. Conservation Officer John Heaphy said hunters at Karioi fared best, with those in Ohakune and Raetihi a close second. In other areas bag numbers were well down on previous seasons. The long dry spell leading up to opening weekend did not end until the Sunday following opening day, with a number of favourite ponds dry or with very little water, according to Mr Heaphy. This resulted in ducks moving
to other areas. This year the Department of Conservation in conjuntion with the Central North Island Wildlife Conservancy Council is conducting a Gamebird Hunter Survey. The results will enable game wardens to determine trends in population numbers, as well as helping provide an information base from which to set game bags in future seasons. The survey will be conducted over six weeks with the final results published in the Bulletin. As only licenced hunters are surveyed, unlicenced landowners will not be eligible to participate. Some hunters will find that they are survey ed more than once. Mr Heaphy said it is important that hunters fill out all survey forms forwarded to them, to enable an accurate table of information to be formulated at the end of the season.
