What the teachers say
The following was written by the teachers of the junior classes at Raetihi Primary school: Children who attend a pre-school facility have many advantages over their peers who don't with very few exceptions. These include socialising skills such as being at ease with peers, teachers and other parents. They are able to work with various materials - aware of what they can do with them - their language skills are extended. These , children settle in better to school routines. Their concentration and listening skills are better - because of this they understand directions given to them. The child who does not go to a pre-school facility has a longer settling in period at school. He/she has to spend time learning the above skills that they could have learnt at a pre-school facility. They do not have the socialising skills that their pre-school peers have and
Their manipulative skills are far more advanced - they have been frequently using paint brushes, scissors, crayons and various types of material, eg water and sand. are not always good at mixing with others and sharing. They generally do not have the manipulative skills that their peers have. Parents should ensure for their child's benefit that they go to a pre-school facility. Both child and parent benefit tremendously. Parental involvement is very important. The child and parent become familiar with other parents and children. Parents feel welcome and encouraged to participate in their child's further education.
