The community pre-school worker for the RaetihiOhakune area is Mary Parsons.
The role of community pre-school worker's is to promote interest in preschool education among parents who might otherwise not see the advantage of it for their children. They encourage parents to enrol their children in existing services where these are available or to set up pre-school groups appropriate to their needs. Community pre-school worker's specific functions are to foster participation in pre-school educations programmes by • identifying and approaching prospective par-
ents in the community. • arousing the interest and enthusiasm of their families in the value of pre-school education. • advising parents on how the need for preschool education can be met from within the family setting of their homes if necessary or appropriate. • advising parents on how to make use of existing services. • engendering the confidence needed to make use of these services. • advising parents on how to set up and run informal family play groups.
