CEMETERY MYSTERY TOUR
Cemetery after cemetery after cemetery ... a unique sightseeing experience for passengers on a coach tour? The occasion was a Sunday "familiarisation" drive for members of the new Waimarino District Council. They were checking out the amalgamation treasure chest Sunday April 10. And what a treasure chest. Cemeteries galore! Councillor Errol Sue says the trip began at Ohakune Cemetery. "The purpose was to show us that something was happening." And what was happening there?: "Not a lot - it was quite dead, really," said District Manager John Murrihy. Then the bus headed south - to Rangataua Cemetery - to "have a look there." "A well-kept cemetery," said Cr Sue. That it is well-kept is a bonus for the council which has inherited the necessary machinery and other gear from the Ohakune Borough Council. "We can do it ourselves now," said Cr Sue. The bus failed to stop at Raetihi Cemetery but Cr Sue says they were told it was "being extended as far as it can go." Other points of interest on the councillors magical mystery tour included a visit to the Raetihi Water Supply and a trip up the Ohakune Mountain Road. Much time was spent travelling around the northern and eastern parts of the district observing works and developments.
