"Chills Off" is a battle

Raising enough money to enclose the Raetihi Swimming Baths is an uphill battle for the dedicated members of the Waimarino Chills Off committee. Chairperson Shirley McDonough is a member of the sub-commit-tee which formed in 1985. The sub-committee wad disbanded early in 1986 and a community committee formed in April of that year. Their intention was to raise $120,000 - the cost of an enclosure over the learners pool and main pool. The enclosure will enable the pools to be

used 4-5 months of the year, rather than just the two month peak summer period. Mrs McDonough said an initial quote of $63,000 in 1983 increases to $97,000 in 1985. "More recently we have been looking at $120,000, although realistically we should be looking higher for 1988," she said. "The longer the project takes, the more money we will need to raise." Mrs McDonough is optimistic that once $60,000 has been raised the committee will be in a better position to apply for appropriate grants. Funds have accumulated from assorted

ventures, including weekly raffles and other special raffles, Galas, community stalls, last year's Fun Day and the recent Medieval Day. Letters to various commercial operators have so far resulted in $1000 cash pledges and $500 goods and advertising. Thc committee has donated stock to uplift and hope to acquire more donations in a proposed stock drive this year. The swimming club and baths committee is also holding money received from grants for covering the pool. A total of $10,500 was raised by the committee in the last 12 months.
