Carnival plans for Queen's Birthday

Ruapehu South Business Association has been granted the right to distribute the profits from the planned Queens Birthday weekend beer festival. Association Secretary Pat van Stone said it was due to the generosity of the sponsors, Dominion Breweries, Fletcher Travel and Radio Hauraki, that RSBA will be able to distribute the money. Clubs and organisations who are financial members of RSBA and who participate in the carnival will be the recipients of any profits. A sub committee has been formed by RSBA to organise a programme of events to coincide with the first Snow Train for winter '88. Events so far programmed are: 11.30am in Ohakune Township, a snow princess competition open to all girls from 5 to 50. RSBA urge you to enrol your favourite girl early. The winner will be taken to the Ohakune Junction for the opening of the carnival at 12.00 noon. Other events planned include a trolley derby, wood chopping, ski racing (with a difference), tug-o-war, carrot eating contest (see your dentist and get your teeth honed, say the organisers), pavement painting (graffiti made legal for a day, judged by Paul Beckett), make a snowman competition (there probably won't be snow so use your imagination) and grass skiing. The Kiwi Lager Beer Fest will be part of the carnival and is the event to be sponsored by Dominion Breweries, Radio Hauraki and Fletcher Travel. An Auckland band will be visiting for the festival. Other events yet to be finalised are: a hangi, coconut shy, displays and stalls, buskers and more. All clubs, businesses and organisations are invited to participate in the day of "fun and frolic". Those that wish to are urged to contact Phil Abel at Wholesome Foods, Val Parkes at Ohakune Shoes, Bob Graves at Raetihi Camp Ground. "Variety is the key word so it will be a matter of first in first served. We don't want masses of people all doing the same things," says RSBA. Also planned is a fun run for Sunday June 5 starting 10.00am. This event needs organisers so if your able you should contact one of the RSBA members mentioned above.
