TRAMPING CLUB TURNS 30
The public have been invited to join with the Wanganui Tramping Club celebrate the 30th birthday of their Mangaturuturu Hut, in Tongariro National Park this weekend. Mangaturuturu Hut was built by club members and officially opened April 6 1958. The club will meet at the hut this Saturday April 9. Public transport has been arranged for the following day from Wanganui to the start of the track on the Ohakune Mountain Road. Club trampers will be guided to the the hut which is an easy 90 minute walk from the road near to the Turoa ski field car park. The guided walk will take in the hut, Lake Surprise and a waterfall below the hut. A ceremony will be held to mark the occasion at the hut. Founder membcr Arthur Bates will be one of the speakers. An aniversary cake will be cut, which may provide sustenance for the hike back to the road. The guided tour is one of the club's I contributions to the New Zealand national parks' centennial.
