Septic tanks county problem

The problem of what to do with the material from cleaning county septic tanks was discussed at the Waimarino County Council meeting of March 23. Cr Gavin Jones suggested the proposed Rangataua Sewerage Scheme be made suitable for discharging septic tanks. Cr Bennett was against this idea saying that dumping septic tank sewage into settling ponds would clog them up. Cr Jones said: "There is septic tank cleanings that have come out of the county that have to be treated and it's our problem." "We should completely divorce this from the Rangataua Sewerage System issue, so that the scheme goes ahead," said Cr Bennett. "I think if we ask for an engineer's report on how we handle the septic tank cleaning in the district and whether the ponds at Rangataua could be used for this," said Cr Jones.

The council was in favour of this suggestion when it was put to the vote.
