WAIOURU FREIGHT JOBGOES
The job of freight manager at Waiouru railway Station has been scrapped. From now most of the paper work for freight will be done in Palmerston North with bookings and ticketing being handled by agents in Waiouru. Relieving manager Barry Lichtwo'rk came to Waiouru last year for two weeks but has been here until now. There had been no permanent freight manager in Waiouru since 1986. Palmerston Railfreight Manager Jim Wilson said in the past most freight handled by Waiouru was household removals but since Railways decided not to offer this service work for the freight manager had dropped off. The station will retain two shunting staff, who will handle the remaining freight work as well as looking after the Tangiwai and Karioi mill sidings. Mr Wilson said Waiouru is still well serviced with two booking agents in the Army Camp and a new agency at the Waiouru Energy Centre, on the main road. The Energy Centre is the depot for Road Services buses and the agent for Speedlink parcels. Mr Wilson said staff changes at Taihape were also coming up, but he would not say what form these changes would take.
