Storm damage low

Tongariro National Park suffered surprisingly little damage from Cyclone Bola last

week. Part of the roof of the Magatepopo Hut was ripped off and the toilet at the hut site was blown into the gully below the hut. Ketetahi Hut also lost its toilet to the wind and suffered a broken window. There was little damage in the Ohakune section of the Park. Two trees were blown down on the mountain road, and a few on the higher tracks. No hut damage was reported. Ohakune Conservation Officer Lisle Irwin said considering the strong winds and the exposed nature of the park they were quite lucky to escape major damage.
