A slip-up in communications

In fairness the Bulletin must today acknowledge a significant slip-up. We failed to attend the final meeting last week of the Waimarino District Council steering committee. This was due to a diary error and oversight on our part. We apologise unreservedly to both councillors and readers. The reason for this apology and acknowledgement is that we made an editorial issue of last month's meeting, noting that the steering committee's discussions ought to be exposed for full public scrutiny and attention. We agree with council sources who feel the final meeting of the steering committee was a significant orfe, particularly because it was the final meeting to be chaired by Ohakune Mayor Bill Taylor who retires from local government when the district council is elected. We apologise personally to Mr Taylor and offer public thanks for all the effort and sacrifice he has made over the years on the town's behalf. Despite our failure to attend the meeting, it has been possible to report on a number of matters from the discussions. This is due to the availability of tape recordings of the verbatum discussion, and we thank district manager John Murrihy and his staff for their cooperation. We remain committed to reporting on and fostering free and open discussion of local government in the Ruapehu region.
