MANGANUI A TE AO PROTECTED

There will be no power development on the Manganui a Te Ao. The National Water and Soil Conservation Authority decided last week to place a national conservation order on the river. Groups that made submissions or objections to the crder application can still appeal the decisison to the Planning Tribunal. The Wanganui Rangitikei Power Board will discuss whether to appeal later this month. The order does not meet all the wishes of the applicant in that it does not prevent minor use, but it does give the river a high level of protection, according to the authority. The conservation order application, which was from the Minister of Internal Affairs asked for the river to be protected in its natural state.
