Hasty pioneer settlers

Isn't it great how almost every time someone wishes to start something new or different we have people wanting to knock them. Re the Hamlet Development in Ohakune. I take my hat off to someone who is prepared to invest such a huge sum of money in our own area. thus cre-

ating many jobs and continuing dollars to servicing businesses such as plumbers, carpenters and food outlets etc. One letter writer commented that our pioneer settlers cleared the land and gardeners toiled

hard to earn an honest "pound". They certainly did and isn't Mr Bell going to work hard to earn his honest "dollar"? I, like a previous writer, am a descendant of pioneer settlers but after working amongst thousands of metres of fallen, burnt, rotting native timber I sometimes wonder whether our pioneer settlers themselves were not a little hasty in clearing the land completely to earn their honest i "pound". Perhaps they could have left a few areas untouched for a 'rainy day'. I once read something that went a little like this: I hate the guys who criticize the other guy, whose enterprise has let him rise, above the guys who criticize. I'm just an 'oldie' but perhaps young enough to have a few thoughts of a young one. I Keep up the g o o d | work Mr Bell.
