Raetihi Bowls History
For the first time in the history o f bowls in the Waimarino, the coveted Simonsen's Cup has found its way to Raetihi. A triumphant team led by captain Lyn Drinkwater retumed home recently with the cup, after a convincing win over Nelson Street Bowling Club of Wanganui.
The Raetihi team of Diane Martin (lead), Linda Sattler (2), Pauline LeNoel (3) and. Lyn Drinkwater played Nelson St Ladies B. Morgan (lead), L. Boulton (2), W. Smith (3) and P. Burch (skip). Mrs Drinkwater attributed their resounding 33/14 win to the "fine team spirit" of the players. It was also the very first time they had played in a tournament together. The very first Cotula
green in Wanganui was a challenge, she said. "We're used to grass greens. By the same token when Wanganui plays up here, it would be like playing in a hay paddock to them." Diane Martin and Linda Sattler will represent Raetihi at the Champion of Champions tournament this week, held in Wanganui. The club's frist challenge for the cup is from St John's Hill in the first week of March.
