HOBBIT HEARING
A town planmng meeting tnis lnursday will decide whether Phil Jackson can build eight extra motel units to add to the Hobbit Motel. The units are planned for the site next to the Hobbit on the corner of Wye and Miro Streets. Access to the units is planned from the existing Hobbit site, with no extra access. One of the conditions suggested by town planner E.C. Fox, of the Wanganui City Council, is that the group of trees on the site be protected and the units be built clear of the trees. Hobbit proprietor Phil Jackson said the trees designated for protection are in the piece of bush on the corner of the site, adjacent to the comer of Wye and Miro Streets. The protection order covers the large gum tree on the site. Mr Jackson said the preservation order was no problem, and that the trees were good for the motel. "Yep, I'm into trees, I'm a conservationist," said Mr Jackson. Because the site is zoned Residential A the application has to be treated as a specified departure under Section 74 of the Town Planning Act.
