Broadside for Hamlet man
Caustic criticism has been levelled against Hamlet developer Harvey Bell in the last week. The basic message from numerous Waimarino residents is: How dare you suggest a change of name for our region! The broadside follows an article in last week's Bulletin offering dinner for two at the Chateau for anyone who can come up with a new, catchy commercial name for the central plateau area. Mr Bell's company wants a suitable
name for the region for marketing and promotional purposes. Several letters from readers criticising his contest are published in our "Mailbag" column on page 6 today. Mr Bell says the letters are ill-consid-ered and the writers have missed his point. "What we want is not a new name for the Waimarino district but a collective name embracing the entire mountain area," he says. "It must take in the entire Waimarino district, the southern Taupo area and the
Tongariro, Wanganui and Rangitikei Rivers." He feels people have misunderstood His appeal. "I don't want to change the name of any area but simply come up with something all-embracing and new." He adds that if there is an existing regional name for the area, he will pay $100 to anyone who can tell him what it is and who can verify it. In the meantime he has also put the challenge for a suitable name to his marketing consultants in Auckland.
