Wanted: One drag Queen
Calling all Waimarino drag queens! The Army is looking for you. No joke. The Army is running a Drag Queen Contest as part of its annual Desert Fair on Saturday March 12. And at this stage the Waimarino district still doesn't have an entrant. There will be four queens in the contest - one each from Taihape, Waiouru, Turangi and Waimarino. The Lions clubs in each of the areas is putting up the candidates. But Ruapehu Lions Club president Geoff Lovegrove says he can't find any poofs in the area. So the Bulletin is lending its services today in this public appeal for a suitable prankster who'd like the job. It's intended running the contest like a beautv queen event with voting in advance and a jiarade on the final day. With this contest there will be photographic displays in the few weeks prior to the fair and it will cost one dollar for one vote. The queen with the most votes and dollars on March 10 will be judged the winner, though the fun and frolics won't be over until the day of the Fair. At 3 o'clock on the afternoon of the fair there will be a parade and the queens will perform three "crowd pleasing events", the nature of which will not be disclosed until the day. Mr Lovegrove, principal of Raetihi Primary School, says the rules of the contest also stipulate that the queens will be judged by "personal appearances, endorsements of products, granting of favours and public acclamation." Applications or names of suitable entrants should be phoned to Mr Lovegrove at Raetihi 54-402 or a/h 54-712.
