Waiouru gun club grows
Waiouru's Rod and Gun Club Christmas shoot and end-of-year presentation held in the weekend was well attended by members and their wives. The club has an increasing role and a large number of active members who regularly take part in local and national competitions. This year's men's trophy was won by the club's president Ted Pearson who was runner up in 1986. Second place went to Alan Foster (vice-president), winner of the cup for two consecutive years, an'd third place to Darren Sharp. Women's trophy: SweeChin Pearson (1), Annettte Ley (2), Brenda Ley (3). The club has enjoyed a high degree of success at competitions held around the country in recent months. Alan Foster took first place in the 'falling plate' and 'man-on-man' competitions held at the 1987 Action Challenge event in Heretaunga in October. He was placed 8/49, with fellow team member John Day placed eighth overall. Alan Foster also took out first place in the National Rifle Association and was
second overall in the NZPA National Action Matches held in Christchurch last month. Safety is of paramount importance to members of the club, as intending members are quick to find out. Beginners start on .22 pistols and when they become adept move on to
semi-automatic and centre fire pistols. After nine months they are recommended to the New Zealand Pistol Association for their gun licence. Before securing a pistol, members must be found to be safe by the club and the police. When not in use on the range, firearms are held in safe custody by the police.
