Ruapehu bowlers pressure Bulls' batsmen

Ruapehu College pulled off an exciting six-run win over Bulls in a limited overs match at Bulls on Saturday. It was a fairly makeshift and depleted team that arrived in Bulls on a hot, humid day. However, after being sent into bat by Bulls, the opening pair of Glen Koorey and Glen Journeaux put on a good partnership of 30 in quick time. After they were dismissed for 16 and 14 respectively, there was a mini-collapse and the team slumped to 46/6. Most batsmen were making a start but then losing their wicket going for lusty hits. The lower order stabilised things a bit, with Kevin Martin making 11; and the innings finished in the 20th over at 7 3/9, "declared". G. Dixon bowled well and was unfortunate only to collect 215. The other bowlers also

did their job well and shared the remaining wickets evenly. In reply, the Ruapehu bowlers applied constant pressure on the batsmen and were rewarded with regular success. Only opener Archer with 16, and later Hill, who ground out a patient 14, could do much against a good display of tight bowling and snappy fielding on a rough field. Bulls required 21 to win with 6 wickets in hand, then just 8 with three in hand. But as the college bowlers continued to bowl efficiently, Bulls were all out in the 21st over for 67. Kevin Martin took the bowling honours with 4-13, but he was ably assisted by Darren McDonnell who took 22-14, Glen Journeaux 2-22, Karl Clement 1-13, and John Laurenson picked up the winning wicket with his second ball. The win was somewhat surprising, considering that six of the regular college players weren't playing; perhaps that was the secret of their success. Whatever, it puts the team in high spirits for their final competition game next week against the Marton team 'Athletic'. Scores: Ruapehu 73 (G. Koorey 16, G. Journeaux 14, K. Martin 11; Archer 2-13, Fredrickson 2-14, M. Dower 22-14, G. Dixon 215) in 20 overs, beat Bulls 67 (Archer 16, Hill 14; K. Martin 4-13, D. McDonnell 2-14, G. Journeaux 222) in 20.2 overs by 6 runs.
