Early trouble for college cricket

Ruapehu College played the Marton team 'Tamati' at the College on Saturday, losing by 8 wickets. With not all players being there at the start of play, Ruapehu decided to bat, after winning the toss. The erratic pitch, combined with the Tamati opening attack, had the college in early trouble at 10/3, then 20/4. Both K. Chase and R. Wasson p^ked up two wickets in five-over stints. The middle and lower order put up a typically aggressive resistance though, often punishing the other bowlers with all manner of shots. However, the bowlers did the job of collecting the wickets, and Ruapehu's innings ended in the 27th over on 82. R. Parsons hit out for 23 runs in the middle and later P. Kerr contributed 13. For Tamati, R. Stantiall took 3-15 and J. Keating 2-15. The target of 83 runs never seemed beyond Tamati and the openers began well. Only the ominous presence of clouds and some rain presented any worries. There was a minor hic-

cough when Ruapehu snapped up two quick wickets with good catches in the middle of the innings, but then K. Chase got into his stride and plundered the bowling. In one less-than-memorable over for the college he hit 25 runs, including two sixes. He then sealed the match with another six in the 22nd over to be unbeaten on 42. Opener S. Muir was also still there on 10 not out, while earlier M. Murray had made 19. Of the Ruapehu bowlers, the best bowling came from R. Parsons who bowled tightly to take 1-6 from 5 overs. Next week the College travel to Marton to tackle Athletic. Results Ruapehu College 82 (R. Parsons 23, P. Kerr 13; R. Stantiall 3-15, R. Wasson 3-17, K. Chase 2-12, J. Keating 2-15) in 2 6-4 overs, lost to Tamati 85/2 (K. Chase 42 n.o., M . Murray 19, S. Muir 10 n.o.) in 21.4 overs, by 8 wickets.
