Old punishment
The following report of a Court case appeared in the New Zealand Herald of 31 October 1887 ... 100 years ago! ★★★ Edward Wilson, William Davidson and Frederick Stanton, three boys of 13 years of age, were charged with stealing nine ducks worth 32s 6d, the property of Mr Green. Sergeant Pratt stated that the ducks had been stolen from the complainant's premises in Ponsonby, and had been sold to a Queen Street poultry establishment. Of the three accused, Wilson appeared to be the ringleader, and had been convicted of no less than eleven similar offences before. His Worship sentenced Wilson to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, and sent Davidson to gaol for one month. As Stanton seemed to have been led into mischief by the others, he would order him only to receive 12 strokes of the birch.
