Fire safety needs help
The fire services in the Waimarino will be enlisting the help of the public to enforce safety and fire prevention this Guy Fawkes, 5 November. As is common with this time of the year, accidents occur through carelessness with fireworks - as do fires that could otherwise be prevented. Both Ohakune and Raetihi volunteer fire brigades attended fires last week that were fireworks related and could have been prevented had common sense prevailed. Raetihi Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Alex Weir said fireworks should be lit away from buildings at all costs and extreme care taken with sky rockets. Another obvious problem is the supervision of children with fireworks. Mr Weir expressed concern that young children are often unattended and accidents can occur. An important reminder from the RSPCA: keep pets locked indoors and away from harm while fireworks are being used.
