Few groups apply for funds

Applications from nonprofit community organisations for funding from COGS (Community Organisation Grants Scheme) closed last Friday 16 October. COGS regional community wofker Helen Sullivan said around $50,000 is available to social service groups and associations in the Waimarino/Rangitikei area. The money is the reserve from an initial $95,000 that was available after the closure of the

Labour Department's VOTP (Voluntary Organisation Training Programme) scheme, early in 1986. A total of $45,000 was distributed to organisations in September of last year and the committee will be meeting in November to consider the latest applications for funding. Ms Sullivan said 25 applications were received last time and she is confident that they will receive as many, if not more applications this time

around. Only a few had been received at the time the Bulletin spoke with Ms Sullivan last week but she maintained that the bulk of applications arrive just days before the closing date. Associations that have benefitted from the grant included the Waimarino Health Watch Committee ($8,000), Maungarongo Marae ($8,400), Plunket ($1,000) and Waimarino Citizens Advice Bureau ($2,000).
