Trip for Marae elders

"A trip of a lifetime" was how one Maori elder from Maungarongo Marae in Ohakune anticipated his visit to Australia. He was one of a 17-strong group of representatives from the Marae who left to cross the Tasman last Friday. The 'Huia Group', the party's collective name will spend 10 days in Australia.

They will spend four days in Sydney and the remaining six in Surfers Paradise, 15 hours drive north of Sydney. One of the organisers of the visit, Charles Mareikura, said for many of the group it is their first overseas trip and will be a valuable learning experience.
