S.A.S. sends out S.O.S.
The S.A.S. or New Zealand Special Air Service Association, which is made up of former S.A.S. members around the country, is sending out an S.O.S. The group, which includes the elite of New Zealand's Army who saw action in Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam, is trying to track down former S.A.S. men to join the association. Secretary Major Jack Haves says records of former personnel are not complete and the new drive to recruit members is being run in conjunction with a new book just published about the S.A.S.'s activities here and overseas. 'Dare To Win', published by Lothian in Auckland, is a first time opening-up of the exclusive highly trained unit. It was written by an American, former air force man Darryl Baker, who married a New Zealander and came here especially to research the book. An S.A.S. member with Rhodesian experience, Mike St Jean, helped Baker put the manuscript together. A nationwide campaign to launch the book starts on 13 September and Jack Hayes is hopeful that will encourage former members of the S.A.S. unit to contact him. His address is P.O. Box 5697, Auckland.
