LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Rangataua drainage 1. I now think I know why the water table at Rangataua is so high that septic tanks are not permissible for building permit purposes - the main drain to the east has a culvert under the State Highway (49) and this culvert is (a) only two feet in diameter and (b) three feet higher than the grit pan. Also the water that does escape over this "spillway" backs up again and yet again, further downstream, into lakes and swamps due to two large dams. The first of these dams has a spillway culvert seven feet above its grit pan, hence a seven foot deep lake has formed, preventing proper drainage. 2. Whose property are those two dams on? None other than Councillor Gavin Jones, chairman of the Waimarino Council Sewerage Committee at Ohutu Grazing. 3. Is there not a conflict of interest situation where this property which appears, at least in part, to control the water table at Rangataua, is owned or controlled by one who is elected to a public office such as is Councillor Jones? 4. Is Councillor Jones in fact eligible to hold this public office in the circumstances? 5. Why has the local catchment board not insisted on lowering the culverts (a) under State Highway 49 and (b) under
Councillor Jones' dams? 6. Why was my letter to the editor in your last (15 September) edition the only one on the subject? Surely Councillor Jones has at least some friends and business acquaintances who are prepared to support his seemingly dictatorial stance by writing to your paper and - of course - using their real names?

Secretary Rangataua Residents and Ratepayers Assn. Entertainment The general consensus amoung people we have talked to about the recent 'raunchy' entertainment organised for the people of Ohakune seems to be that it was extremely disappointing. Sunday 23 August, the men of this town were entertained by an international, professional "Raunchy Revue" for $7. They experienced a classy night's entertainment, and a good night was had by all. Sunday 30 August the ladies of this town were subjected to a "Local Ego Revue" which apart frorn a jolly good laugh (no offence boys) was, we feel, a total rip off at $9. We ask the organisers to justify these costings to the actual entertainment. Another event, organised
by our local Radio Station was the Fancy Dress Thanksgiving dinner held at the Sunbeam. A handful of people actually dressed in Fancy Dress. You would expect the organisers to dress up, wouldn't you? We certainly don't mind supporting events to help us through our winter but we do object to not getting what is advertised. Two disappointing events.
Ripped Off
Blame the yanks In the last decade or so there has been a constant stream of criticism of the CIA for their involvement in such diverse issues as responsibility for, among other things: introducing the AIDS virus from outer space; the birth of Siamese twins; the three cent rise in milk prices; the poor ski season; Rangataua's high water-table; Irish jokes; the current 'swarm' of earthquakes; the recent rise in the temperature of the Crater Lake; the French Revolution; the murder of Julius Caesar and the extermination of the dinosaurs etc, etc. With such overwhelming evidence of involvement, I am absolutely convinced, as Iran has claimed, that ihe CIA was behind last week's television programme entitled: The Sword of Islam".
