Two local riders qualify as grooms
Members from the Palmerston North and Waimarino Riding Clubs joined Wanganui Riding Club members at the Rivendell Riding Centre, Wanganui weekend before last to sit the Grooms 1 examination. Eleven members were examined by Margaret Harris of Wellington and seven passed. Waimarino passes went to Mrs Helene Godfrey and Mrs Evelyn Cooper. Grooms I is the first of the Horse Management certificates, as opposed to Equilation (riding skills) and this was the first of its kind for adults in New Zealand. Grooms 2 is of a much higher standard and it is hoped this examination will be held for its first candidates in November,
with a further group doing Grooms 1 at the same time. The Saturday afternoon and Sunday were very profitably used for a Seminar on Grooms 1 and 2 highlighting the difference in the required standards. This seminar was taken by Margaret and other riding club members from Wellington, Levin and Wanganui also attended. A lot of valuable information was exchanged in an informal atmosphere with practical experience in lunging, grooming, float loading, first-aid, stable management and construction, saddlery and feeding and other disciplines. With the Pony Club season about to start in the Waimarino, we hope to be able to hold riding club rallies in the near future. Enquiries should be made to the Secretary, Mrs J Pointon or the President. Mrs E. Cooper.
