Hundreds At Cold Kiwi

A 'cold Kiwi' rally, a gathering of motorcycles and people staged near the mountains and in winter time, was held on the Desert Road, near Waiouru, last weekend. Over two thousand people attended the rally. 'Cold weather gear, woollen hats and socks and long johns were the

order of the day. Visitors camped out in tents and grouped together for meals. The weekend's events included oldest entrant, oldest bike, smallest bike, furtherest travelled, best bike and hill climb. Novelty events such as tug-of-war and a wheelie competition are always

favourites. The 'Cold Kiwi' is organised every year by the Ruapehu Motorcycle Club, based in Taihape. Bikes at the rally included the whole Japanese range and a fair number of English bikes - Triumphs, Nortons and BMW's.
