Citizens Advisors train
The first training session for Waimarino Citizens Advice Bureau volunteers was held at the Ohakune Primary School over the weekend. Fourteen local people took part in the course which was conducted by Pat Griffiths, a practising Psychotherapist and experienced Family Counsellor, from Taihape. During the 10-hour course, trainees participated in exercises designed for them to discover their helpful and unhelpful attributes. The group learned techniques which will help them to be more efficient and sympathetic in dealing with the public. A follow-up course will ber held in two weeks time, again at the Primary School. During this session the trainees will continue to practise listening and basic counselling skills and will further examine their attitudes as prospective helpers, according to course co-ordi-nator Judy Doyle. Mrs Doyle said they will then practise the techniques learned by teaching the volunteers who were absent from the courses. At present, there are 13 women and one man training as volunteers. Mrs Doyle is hopeful more men will be forthcoming for input to the Bureau.
